LEWS CASTLE

I undertook my Part I experience with Simpson & Brown Architects, Edinburgh. Whilst I was with the company I had the opportunity to work on many projects, a considerable amount of them conservation or heritage related. This was a major part of why I applied to Simpson & Brown as historic buildings and their refurbishment or conservation was something I wanted to learn more about.

One such project was Lews Castle, Stornoway. Simpson & Brown were overseeing the conservation and reinstatement of the original interiors. I worked on room elevations for these, which involved detailed consideration of the finishes and accurate representation of colour schemes.

Below are some images from other S&B projects I worked on, including a new housing development in Craighouse, Edinburgh, on a difficult sloping site. I also worked on room layouts for a house refurbishment in London, and the redevelopment of Perth City Hall.

One of the most exciting things I was involved in was the consolidation of Penicuik House, where I attended site meetings and inspections, and then wrote up minutes for the project Architect. This was a great experience that really fueled my desire to be involved on site, and where I first appreciated how much easier it is to understand details and construction when you are involved first hand in its creation, and you see it built.
