OLIVA MOLINO

mOLINO DE ACEITE DE OLIVA, semester two, ESALA

My Final Masters Project. This Olive Oil Mill sits in the Guadalquivir river as it runs through the city of Cordoba, Andalusia, Spain, downstream from the Roman bridge & Moorish mills & weir. The mill produces oil from olives sourced from the surrounding countryside and would provides the oil to restaurants around the Mezquita/Cathedral.

The building attempts to engage a wider context than that of the city alone, using the fields of Cordoba province to supply olives to the mill, using the river to transport them (research showed the time from harvest to processing affects the quality of the end product) and the power of the river to process them.

The context of the river is crucial to the building. Harnessing the river allows access and its power processes the olives. The airflow over the mills engineered weir controls the environment within the building, allowing the project to be a passive and long lived. The mill is highly crafted, bespokely suited to its context and function, and inspired by the context both spatially and historically.
