This project focuses on the internal refurbishment of a previously converted bungalow in the north of England, which was historically a pheasantry. The refurb took place between 2017 -2018.

The first discussion with the client was around upgrading the kitchen, which was still the original oak kitchen from the conversion in the 1980s. The Client wanted to maximise space and re-define the uses of rooms more clearly. I suggested a bold change from the large kitchen they had, to one row of units along the north facing wall, taller units providing ovens, storage and a pantry cupboard, hidden in the run of units with all activity arranged around a new island. The kitchen was the oldest part of the building and whilst carrying out roof repairs as the first part of the refurbishment, it was decided to take the ceiling in the kitchen up to the roof timbers, which creates a dramatic family space, with room for the large oak dining table, complete with weighted lamps above, all of which overlooks the patio and large garden, connecting inside and outside more successfully than before.

I also worked on the interior remodelling of the hallway, lounge, bathroom and utility. The brief throughout was to provide a lighter, brighter and more user friendly space, with a refined palette of modern, robust materials. Images of the lounge are to follow, but the most exciting thing in this room was the bespoke light fitting, which I designed with the client, it is powder coated steel and wrapped in LEDs to give a ambient lighting effect, with task lighting provided by floor lamps. I think it more successful than the use of spot lights, which can be very harsh in a living room environment. We also designed some bespoke planting beds for the vegetable plot, which are clad in brick but constructed from metal and can be easily moved and lowered into position.

Overall I am delighted with the finished product, especially when (as seen below) it is compared with the existing photographs. Most importantly the Client is happy and impressed by the potential of the house that has been realised.
