the tray
the tray, 3Rd year design, EDINBURGH COLLEGE OF ART
The remainder of third year was dedicated to redesigning the waterfront of Dundee, as the city had receded from the docks and left an abandoned tangle of impenetrable dual carriageway.
My master-plan re-directed the roads around the city and freed up of the waterfront for development. I retained Tayside House, which was a council building, and employed it as a new hotel instead. This was controversial, but I didn't want to wipe away the recent history of the waterfront and I liked the proportions of the building if it could be re-used and separated from over road walkways.
I also included a new train station and marina in effort to bring activity back to the docks. I used the museum to create a juxtaposition of frozen history beside the ever changing present. I achieved this by creating dry docks to house the city's sea faring past. My Museum, however, sits in "The Tray". Visitors arrive through a separate, metal clad dry dock, walking between ships then under the steel mass of the building, before progressing up through its twisting form.
My favourite part of this project was the detailed work creating the staircase which doubled as the reception desk. This was the last project I completed solely with hand-drawings.
